CREDO Featured Title of the Month
Encyclopedia of American Poetry: The Twentieth Century from Routledge
This book contains over 400 entries, covering all aspects of American poetry in the twentieth century. Entries fall into three main categories: poet entries (Conrad Aiken to Louis Zukofsky); entries on individual works, which offer closer explication of the most resonant poems in the 20th-century canon; and topical entries, which offer analyses of a given period of literary production, school, thematically constructed category, or other verse tradition that historically has been in dialogue with the poetry of the United States.
View some of the in-depth entries about poets:
Elizabeth Bishop (1911-79) and One Art, one of her well-known poems
T.S. Eliot (1888-1965) and his poem The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock
Allen Ginsberg (1926-97), one of the beat poets
Marianne Moore (1887-1972) and her poem about poetry -- Poetry
Charles Simic (1938- ), current Poet Laureate of the United States
In addition to entries on American poets, the book features topical essays on key developments in poetry:
